Invite Only documents the world surrounding the event: where influential guests stay, where they dine, what they wear, which cultural events happen around it, how hospitality works, and what the destination feels like during that particular week. Invite Only is an independent journal, founded by creative director and host Val Okolu. Through a first-person lens shaped by art, music, and creative production, it stays with the week an occasion creates - the room, the table, the clothes, and the city while the city is otherwise occupied.

Val Okolu · Founder, Editorial Director & Host

The standing map of those weeks is the Invitation Calendar.

The role

Founder, Editorial Director & Host covers the publication, the creative leadership, and the on-camera presence. Journalist is the working word for reporting: interviewing people, verifying details, adding context, and writing or producing a story.

A title alone does not make a press credential. A body of published work can support one. Coverage here mixes a first-person standard - what the editor will and will not claim - with reporting that gives a story substance. “I stayed here” is used only when it is true. Until then, a piece says what it is.

How a piece is labeled

  • Essay

An argument about a place, a meal, or a cultural moment. Not a diary of a borrowed night.

  • Guide

Researched and practical. Not filed as a personal stay. Confirm the details before you travel.

  • Design note

A reading of architecture, history, and what a house has said about itself in public.

  • Field note

The editor’s method, the practical margin, and the years the journal refused to invent a trip.

The sections

  • The Stay

Hotels, resorts, design, service, and what makes a place memorable once the photograph is over.

  • The Table

Serious restaurants, chefs, dining rooms, and the food culture that never makes the tasting menu.

  • The Moment

The gatherings on the Invitation Calendar, and the week a city spends inside one of them.

  • The Journey

Destination stories, itineraries, and the landmarks that still earn the trip.

  • Field Notes

The editor’s working method, practical details, and what the journal will and will not claim.

A decade, briefly

Established in 2018 and relaunched in 2021. What follows is the public selection - not every page the desk has set, but the through-line.

  1. 2018 · No. 1

The InvitationWe opened with a letter, not a list. The name was an invitation into experiences. It still is.

  2. 2018 · No. 5

From the HillA small city becomes a circuit. We looked at a grand prix weekend from above, and labeled the piece a guide.

  3. 2018 · No. 8

The Morning RoomA ryokan changes jobs between dinner and breakfast. We wrote the sequence, not a borrowed night.

  4. 2018 · No. 10

A Winter TableParis in the cold, when sitting down is the whole plot.

  5. 2019 · No. 11

The TurnNew Year’s Eve on Copacabana, from the night itself. White clothes, the sea, and the fireworks.

  6. 2019 · No. 12

The CounterAn argument against covering only the meals that come with a speech.

  7. 2020 · No. 14

Staying StillThe issue we published when we would not invent a trip. Empty rooms were the honest photograph.

  8. 2021 · No. 17

The First Table BackDining rooms reopened unevenly. We wrote about conduct, not a comeback tour.

  9. 2022 · No. 20

After DarkNight as a method - from parade avenues to ordinary midnights - rather than a style.

  10. 2022 · No. 21

Above the BeachSanta Teresa, and the choice to face the city instead of the sand.

  11. 2023 · No. 22

Carnival, ProperlyThe difference between seeing the feathers and going to the week. We took the street seriously.

  12. 2023 · No. 23

The Art of ArrivalFasano Rio, taken as design: a sequence, not a rooftop. Arrival is the whole argument.

  13. 2024 · No. 27

The Drawing RoomThe Copacabana Palace, a century and a year on, still facing the same Atlantic. We read the building. We did not invent a key.

  14. 2024 · No. 28

The RiadA personal stay at Royal Mansour Marrakech, and the market outside it. Filed from the 2024 visit: the riad, then Jemaa el-Fnaa and the spices.

  15. 2025 · No. 29

One CoastFive days, and the discipline of repeating the best hour instead of collecting the whole map.

  16. 2025 · No. 31

WhiteBefore the fireworks, the water. A short issue on offerings, distance, and the difference between a ritual and a picture.

  17. 2026 · No. 32

The Year TurnsThis issue follows Carnival week on one coastline, and a longer argument about hotels - what they are for, once the photograph is finished.

  18. 2026 · No. 33

The WaterlineThe Monaco Yacht Show, from the quay, and the stay on Casino Square that held the week. The boats are a 4.5. The hotel is a five.
