Guide · Rio de Janeiro to Paraty

Five days on one coast

A researched line from Copacabana to Paraty - beaches that are not interchangeable, one hill day, and a colonial coast that floods on purpose.

A colonial waterfront in Paraty with a white church, cobblestones, and wooden boats in calm water at golden hour.
Paraty, where the tide still comes up into the streets.

Five days is enough for one coast if you stop treating Rio as a list. The beaches alone are different cities that happen to share sand. Leme is quieter at its far end. Copacabana is the great public room. Ipanema watches itself. Leblon spends money. You do not need all four. You need one morning swim you will repeat.

A line that leaves room

Day one is arrival and geometry: get to the water before you get to a viewpoint. Day two is Santa Teresa, a long lunch, and a return while the light is still decent - the hill guide in this archive is the practical version. Day three is a museum day, not a backdrop day. The Museu de Arte do Rio, in the center, is the one we would protect on a short trip; the Museu de Arte Moderna is the other. Confirm what is open. The Selarón staircase is a memorial as much as a sight. If you go, do not make a production on it.

Day four is the decision. Either cross the bay to Niterói for Niemeyer’s MAC - the museum finished in the 1990s, set over the water like a lens - or give the day to the road and stay overnight toward Paraty. Paraty, with Ilha Grande, was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2019. The historic center is cobbled, low, and built so the tide can enter the streets. That is not a malfunction. Walk it in late light. Sleep there if you can; a day trip from Rio makes the coast into a windshield.

Day five is repetition. The best meal again, or the same swim. An itinerary that is full has no taste. This one is researched, not a diary, and the driving times assume ordinary traffic. Carnival and Réveillon are not ordinary traffic.
